Inequality: Or, I get an 'F' in gift-giving.

Yesterday was wedding anniversary #6 for DH and I.

We didn't exchange presents until early evening as DH was away for most of the day.

I went to Lowe's in a panic (Sunday) and got him a fire-safe (larger than our current one) and a couple rib/potato racks for the grill (the last time he made ribs he commented that it would have been easier with a rack). And I got him a card.

He got me a pair of beautiful diamond studs. He picked out the loose diamonds, he picked out the settings, and made sure that the backs were also gold so they wouldn't make my skin break out. His lack of card was forgiven.

....

Oh yeah, this is all my fault. I should have started thinking about a present in February or January even. One of these years I'm going to book a long weekend away - either someplace warm or one of the ski area's out west - he'd enjoy either version, but a surprise trip like that takes a great deal of pre-planning. I did check his on-going gift list which had only one item on it, and not an exciting or easily available one at that. And I have to say I did ask him what he wanted, and he wasn't very helpful. But I should have started this process earlier, and I should have left it at the rib racks with a note in the card that I wasn't sure what to get him.

So, what's the best unexpected gift you've received or the best/worst (but well meant) gift you've given?
