French Fry Spam Casserole

That was the banner ad above my emails on gmail. I usually ignore those ads, but this one really caught my attention, and not in a good way!

Pardon me while I go find a nice trash can in which to vomit. Because I don't know about you, but the thought of that combination is so not good.

What I really want to know is who came up with the recipe and, more importantly, why? What trauma had that person undergone to even think that combining those two foods would be tasty?

I could be biased...it's true I recall eating Spam at times growing up - fried? maybe? - but exposure to Monty Python put an end to my wanting to eat it (it's reappearance in 50 First Dates didn't provoke any interest either). I like french fries with ketchup and have even been known to enjoy dipping fries into both plain mayo and mayo/ketchup mixtures. But the combination of the two - I don't want to think about it.

Of course, I still enjoy Scrapple (for those not from the mid-atlantic, it's a cornmeal and meat product breakfast food that is sliced and fried) when it is available. That's something which certainly has the ability to turn people off as much as Spam or hot dogs. Or even liver, which I also enjoy (on a very irregular basis, to my husbands relief).

But back to Fries and Spam - I suppose it could be in the same family as those Hash Brown casseroles that crop up in Family Circle, Southern Living, and the like as reader submissions occasionally.

What's your take? Am I missing out on one of the great American meals or am I justified in my revulsion? In the same line, what foods do you enjoy that others find disturbing?

  1. Anything with spam makes me want to hurl, but that's probably because I've never eaten it. Still though...Ewww.

Just FYI, I've tagged you for a blog meme...Enjoy! http://erikamitchell.blogspot.com/2009/02/worlds-longest-post.html
