Ummm, you did grow up in America, didn't you?

That's what I've thought a few times recently about my husband. And this is why:

1. I mentioned the Donner Party in regards to cannibalism and he had no idea what I meant. What kid in an American History class isn't intrigued by that story?

2.1. Little One has taken to sucking on her burp cloths (cloth diapers), wash cloths (given to her dry), as well as the sleeves of her shirts. Seeing this, DH came out with "she's a carpet muncher." And had NO IDEA what he was saying.
2.2. In trying to explain what he had said, I used the phrase "carpet matches the drapes." Again, blank stare.

Maybe it's because he's an engineer? I dunno - but I thought it was pretty strange that he wasn't familiar with any of the above things.

(I'll give him a pass on not comprehending when I mention recent celebrity gossip since I watch Entertainment Tonight & the other "entertainment news" show semi-regularly, and even the Today show covers a fair number of those stories after he's left for work.)

Please tell me that this isn't something only I've experienced!

  1. LOOOL!!!
I heard about #1, and remembered it because I associate it with the reindeer name (Donner and Blitzen, yada, yada). This is how I remember a lot of stuff, through weird association.
But my slang is not quite as extensive as I thought it would be, hence no idea about the rest. Still, I can always play the 'am not a native speaker' card, can't I? ;-))

  5. Forgive me for hijacking your post, but I wanted to let you know that "suit your copperosity" has been a part of my family's lexicon for as long as I can remember. I think it's a Southern expression. Mom was born in Arkansas, Dad and two brothers in Mississippi, and I in Tennessee.

Oh, and regarding your post, I've been over the Donner pass and have seen the memorial.
