This weekend I got the hankerin' to make some scratch cookies. (read that with a mountain accent, like the Clampetts, of course).
"Chocolate Chip or Peanut Blossom" I asked DH. "Peanut Blossom" was his prompt reply.**
(for those who aren't aware of their true name, Peanut Blossom cookies are peanut butter cookies with a Hershey's kiss smooshed in the middle immediately after baking)
1PM: Out came the mixer, the flour, the butter, the eggs, etc. I DID have all the ingredients!
The two year old baking powder came through for me, but is now on the grocery list for replacement.
I also want to share how much I love that my kitchen has a special cabinet with a locking pull-up shelf where my mixer lives and a pull out tray for all the attachments (and my big-ass rolling pin), so I don't have to give up counter space to store it!
The resulting dough headed to the refrigerator to chill before rolling into balls (hee, enter 12 year old boy), dredging in sugar, and baking.
2PM: "Are the cookies ready?" "No, the dough is chilling."
3PM: "Are the cookies ready?" "I've been helping you with this, have I had a chance to go bake them?" "Well, go bake them already and you can do this while you're waiting for them to bake."
330PM-5PM The majority of dough has been rolled into balls, dredged in sugar, baked and topped with a Kiss. The last batch was missing 4 kisses because I ran out of kisses but didn't realize it until the batch was out of the oven. Also note that I did not return to helping DH with his project!
Apparently the bag of unwrapped Kisses, the inspiration for making the cookies, does not contain enough candies for a normal batch of 4-dozen or so cookies. At least that's how many the recipe I used makes; the recipe on the bag calls for less of each ingredient, so maybe it makes fewer (but it would really suck to follow that recipe and run out of Kisses). boo. Luckily I had Kisses left over from the last time I make these in the spring, so was able to supplement for the last couple of batches.
I know what's really blowing your mind is that I had the Kisses left over. That's what happens when you get tired of looking at the bag on the counter (again, shock!) so you dump them into the candy bowl, and then they migrate down and hibernate under the top layer of loser candy (the kind you only eat when you are desperate for something). In cleaning out the bowl to make room for all of the left-over Halloween candy, I had found them, re-bagged them, and put them with the baking supplies for future needs.
Oh yeah, the cookies turned out great. And are in the process of melding to my hips. My plea of "Don't you want to take some with you to work?"was met with "Why would I want to share?" Augh!

Oh, I love those things! I have candy like that too that get lost at the bottom of the candy dish :)
ReplyDeletemmm sounds so good! I love that kind of cookie. I always make things or have sweets leftover and I ask Edgar if he'll bring them to work to get them away from me and he never wants to share either. So, yes, melting into my hips they go.
ReplyDeleteWe call them peanut butter chocolate nipple cookies. Or nips, for short.
